Things have been pretty quiet on this blog, and it’s about time we started playing catch up. Eventually we’ll also get around to changing the title of the blog itself since we don’t live in Boston anymore. We never actually mentioned here that we were expecting a baby, but now that she has arrived, it’s probably appropriate to start talking about her. We get asked a lot of the same questions, so here’s a round up of information about the newest arrival.
1. What is her name? How did you choose her name?
Eliza Mae Godfrey, named for two family members. Eliza Jane Godfrey was the daughter of Joseph Godfrey, M’s great great great grandfather who died at 6 months old in Winter Quarters, Nebraska with the Mormon pioneers. Ethel Mae Juffs was my great grandmother, who was also pretty awesome.
2. When was she born?
Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at 9:48 am. 11 days past her due date at Foothills Medical Center in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. (She’s 7 1/2 weeks old now)
3. How big was she?
8 lbs 1 oz, 51 cm (20 inches) long
4. How big is she now?
At her 6 week checkup she was 8 lbs 14 oz, 58 cm long.
5. How was the delivery? How long was your labour?
I’m not really sure how to measure the labour. I went into labour naturally. From the first contraction to her birth was 32 hours, but things started to pick up for about the last 13 hours or so. My midwife came over around 6:30 in the morning, I was 6 cm dilated. We arrived at the hospital by 7am and she was born before 10 with no complications.
6. How is breastfeeding going?
It’s still pretty rough. We’ve informally diagnosed her with a lip tie, which means the frenulum between her upper lip and gum is tight and thick and prevents her from getting a good latch. We’re taking her to a dentist in a couple weeks to get it formally diagnosed and treated (laser surgery). We’ve had a lot of advice from midwives and lactation consultants. Some of it helped, and some of it didn’t, but we’re hoping this will solve things once and for all.
7. Is she a good sleeper? Are you getting any sleep?
She’s a great sleeper. Usually. M sleeps through all the crying, feedings, and diaper changes in the middle of the night, so he’s doing fine. I’m trying to “sleep when the baby sleeps” like everyone tells me to, but since her feedings last for hours on end, most of what I do when she naps is eat, go to the washroom, shower, and pump more milk.
8. Who does she look like more?
She looks a lot like both of us. Check back in a couple years and you’ll probably see a clearer resemblance.
9. What’s her favourite colour?
Just kidding. No one has ever asked us that. But she does like black and white.
10. Is she a dual citizen?
Not yet. She was born in Canada, so she has her Canadian citizenship automatically. We went to the US Consulate last week to submit her paperwork to report a birth abroad. So she should be a dual citizen within a matter of weeks.
Many more updates will come soon! Stay tuned.
